Challenge
Ridgemont sits on a site made entirely of black cotton soil, a material known for swelling, shrinking, and compromising poorly built structures. The brief demanded a home engineered for decades of seasonal movement.
Approach
We excavated to a stable depth, replaced the problematic soil with compacted murram, and designed reinforced strip foundations with deeper footings and double mesh. A full perimeter French drain manages seasonal waterlogging and protects the foundation system across seasons.
Materials
- Coursed Laikipia stone
- Dark standing-seam metal roof
- Reinforced concrete substructure
- Mvule hardwood joinery
Outcome
A home built to last: thoughtful engineering, context-first decisions, and coordinated execution from concept to handover. Ridgemont is our reference project for difficult ground.
When clients ask how HKM handles the worst ground conditions in central Kenya, Ridgemont is the answer.
